Greetings:
As a visibly identifiable teacher of color, I do not have many students of color in my courses. The student population at my institution is not, yet, that diverse. This circumstance extends my teaching to areas of the campus that reach beyond my classroom (the elevator, hallways, stairwells, library, the commons, campus dining, the bus stop, and so on).
Strategy
1. Teach students wherever you find them.
2. Can't find them? Look more earnestly.
3. Make a point to see and find them.
4. Stretch your definition of "teaching" to include practices for engaging and acknowledging their human presence.
5. When you find them engage them using polite speech with tones and gestures that show genuine interest.
6. If the students appear afraid, nervous, or taken aback - they are - and these are appropriate responses.
7. You should not give up even if they seem too because, yes, the problem IS YOU (most likely) NOT them.
